Common Name: Maxima Clam, Small Giant Clam
Scientific Name: Tridacna maxima
Specimen Size: Approximately 5.25″ long shell
Origination: Wild import from Tahiti
Entry Updated: 5/3/2017
Maxima clams are some of the brightest colored giant clams commonly kept in the home reef tank. Colors are often blue or gold and are often multicolored.
They are also one of the more difficult of the Tridacna or Giant Clams to keep in a reef tank ranking just below the Crocea clam. They require intense lighting such as from metal halide or high intensity LEDs.
Clams over 2″ in size do not need any supplemental feeding which is why we only sell larger sizes. Maxima clams are the second smallest of the ‘giant’ clams next to the Crocea clam and top out at about 12″ in the wild and usually 6″ or so in the home reef tank, so they are suitable for most sizes of tanks.
They are rock boring clams in the wild and generally prefer to be placed up on the rockwork where they can get maximum lighting and moderate water flow. If placed on a solid substrate, they will typically attach to it within a few days. If they are not happy with the spot, they will use their foot to launch themselves down off the rock work, so care should be taken. They can also often do well on the sand bed if strong lighting reaches the sand bed.
As is the case with stony corals, attention needs to be paid to maintaining proper Calcium and Alkalinity levels in the reef tank for proper shell development as noted on the right.

||We want you to be happy with the coral that you receive and we take pride in the corals that we offer. To provide true representation of the color and health for our WYSIWYG corals, they are photographed and white balanced under the ReefCorner LED lighting at approximately a 10K to 14K white point to best show the actual color of the coral. The coloration may vary when viewed under different lighting. The grid the coral is typically photographed on is approximately 0.6" per square to give you a size reference.
||We identify the scientific name when we are able to with some degree of accuracy. You will notice that we don’t give our corals cool names like “AWESOME ULTRA SUPER METALLIC NEON RED AND SCREAMING LIME GREEN ULTRA ULTRA COLORED AUSSIE” unless it is a name in common usage in the hobby that helps to identify the coral. We let our pictures do the talking and you can be the judge of whether our corals are awesome or not.
