 OVERVIEW

Platygyra are one of the many corals sometimes referred to as Brain corals.  They can usually be recognized by the fact that their corallites form maze or worm like channels across the coral which also gives them the common name of Worm Coral.

Colors may include brown, green, red, white, gray and purple.  Ridges and valleys are usually distinctly colored.

They like moderate light and will do well under almost any lighting systems. If using high powered LED or metal halide, the corals may need to be positioned in a shaded area at the bottom of the tank.

They also like low to moderate water flow.

Platygyra coral are photosynthetic, but will benefit from an occasional feeding of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or Cyclopeeze when their tentacles are extended at night.

As is the case with all stony corals, attention needs to be paid to maintaining proper Calcium and Alkalinity levels in the reef tank for proper skeletal development as noted on the right.

They often display fairly long sweeper tentacles at night, so care should be used in their placement next to other corals.

Photo Notes We want you to be happy with the coral that you receive and we take pride in the corals that we offer.  To provide true representation of the color and health for our WYSIWYG corals, they are photographed and white balanced under the ReefCorner LED lighting at approximately a 10K to 14K white point to best show the actual color of the coral. The coloration may vary when viewed under different lighting.  The grid the coral is typically photographed on is approximately 0.6" per square to give you a size reference.
Naming Notes We identify the scientific name when we are able to with some degree of accuracy. You will notice that we don’t give our corals cool names like “AWESOME ULTRA SUPER METALLIC NEON RED AND SCREAMING LIME GREEN ULTRA ULTRA COLORED AUSSIE” unless it is a name in common usage in the hobby that helps to identify the coral. We let our pictures do the talking and you can be the judge of whether our corals are awesome or not.

General Care Requirements:

Care Level: Easy to intermediate.  Platygyra are one of the more delicate family of brain corals, but they are still typically fairly hardy once acclimated and provided with the right lighting and water flow.
Lighting:  Low to Moderate.
Waterflow:  Moderate
Placement: Low on rock work or on sand bed.
Aggressiveness: Moderate to high. Some can extend fairly long sweeper tentacles at night, so will need some space around it.
Water Parameters:  Stony corals require that water quality is kept high and the following parameters are monitored and maintained to within the tolerable bounds:
Temperature: 76-82
Specific Gravity: 1.024 - 1.026
Alkalinity: 8dKH - 12dKH
Calcium: 400ppm or above
Magnesium: 1250ppm or above
